Understanding

Why this is important and urgent:  the business impact of climate change

Climate change will soon imperil our way of life, transforming regions, imposing substantial costs on the economy, and harming the health of citizens and future generations.

The name Chapter Zero reflects the drive towards a net zero carbon economy and the major role business plays in achieving it.

Is your board prepared?

Understand the risks and opportunities to the business with respect to climate change, identify and incorporate risk management activities.

Questions Non-Executive-Directors should be asking in 2020

How can I as a Board Director educate myself on climate change?
What is my role?
What evidence can I gather to get climate change on to the board agenda?
What difference can a Board Director make?

Informing, Inspiring & Enabling

Chapter Zero provides toolkits and resources that actively support conversations on climate risk, opportunity and business strategy in the board room.

  • Develop a strategy which is being integrated into the business model
  • Ensure the appropriate executive director ownership and stakeholder engagement and communication takes place
  • Adopt Principles for Effective Climate Governance, launched at the World Economic Forum in 2019
  • Ask the right questions of the CFO, CEO and COO to ensure the board has the papers it needs for effective discussion, challenge and oversight
  • Know the landscape of specialist advisers
  • Prepare for reporting in line with the Taskforce for Climate-related Financial Disclosure

Change Management Toolkit

Principles and frameworks for climate change strategy and action.
The tool kit is made up of frameworks and case studies, structured around three phases in any organisation’s climate change journey.

Brands and climate crisis

Brands can battle the climate crisis.
Together, Wolff Olins and Chapter Zero are arming boards and marketing leaders with the arguments they need to ensure brand is a force for good.

Director's Climate Journey

This journey aims to help Board Directors have high quality and effective boardroom discussions and debate on the impacts of climate change on businesses and strategic response.

Increase the understanding of who should take the journey, which are the impacted sectors, see examples of implementation, financial implications and take the climate action self-assessment.

Did you know?

A change of just 0.5 °C more can cause widespread damage and destruction.

At 1.5 °C, only half as many people on the planet will be exposed to water stress than at 2 °C.

We need ecological recovery: reforestation to draw carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, a tectonic shift in our transport and power systems to clean, renewable energy, greater adoption of carbon-capture technologies, and changes in the practices of agriculture.

Humanity has wiped out about 60% of animal populations since 1970. The decline in the number of insects and species deeply affects the functioning of the whole ecosystem. A decline of one species by 30% can eventually lead to the extinction of another species.

When it comes to climate change, it is essential that corporations and NPOs work hand in hand with politicians and other social groups. Therefore, it is prudent to use corporate lobbying to encourage progressive climate policies.
